CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – The Middle Township High School girls tennis team furthered its strong 2017 season run with another state playoff victory Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Panthers, seeded fourth in the South Jersey Group II Tournament, posted a 4-1 decision over No. 5 Cedar Creek to advance to Friday’s sectional semifinal match with No. 1 seed Haddonfield, one of the top girls tennis programs in the state.

Cedar Creek’s Charisse Tigrado won the first singles match in straight sets, but Middle win at the four other slots to claim the victory. Two of the matches were decided in three sets.

Middle’s Sophia Ellis won 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-1, at second singles and Olivia Banach claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win at third singles.

After dropping the first set, Middle’s Maddie Deane and Sofia Lomax came out victorious in a match that went the distance at first doubles. The score was 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1). And Middle’s Samantha Braun and Abigail Smith scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory at second doubles.

Middle improved to 12-3 on the season with the win.

Middle had advanced to the second round with a 5-0 win over No. 13 Deptford late last week. The Lady Panthers won four of the five matches in straight sets.
