Atlantic City boys, Mainland girls are top seeds in CAL Tournament

By TOM WILLIAMS

The Cape-Atlantic League has selected its eight teams for both the boys and girls tournaments. And Wednesday night’s games will have no bearing on the decision.

The Atlantic City boys and the Mainland girls are the No. 1 seeds. Most of the first round games are expected to be played Friday night.

In the boys tournament, No. 1 Atlantic City will host No. 8 Ocean City in the first round, either at the Dr. Martin Luther King Complex or Stockton University; No. 2 Wildwood Catholic will host No. 7 Millville; No. 3 St. Augustine, the three-time defending champion, will host No. 6 Holy Spirit; and 4 Pleasantville will host No. 5 St. Joseph.

Pleasantville still has a problem to face, however. The Greyhounds will enter the CAL Tournament having played 24 games which means they would have 27 if they reached the championship game. That would make them ineligible for the NJSIAA Group 2 Tournament, since the limit on regular season games is 26.

Pleasantville would need to get permission from the NJSIAA to play that 27th game, if necessary.

Boys consolation games on Tuesday, Feb. 20 are Vineland at Lower Cape May, Mainland at Middle Township, Buena at Egg Harbor Township, Absegami at Cape May Tech, Atlantic Tech at Oakcrest and Bridgeton at Cedar Creek. Additional consolation games will be played on Feb. 23.

In the girls tournament, No. 1 Mainland will host No. 8 Wildwood Catholic; No. 2 Ocean City, the defending champion, will host No. 7 Cedar Creek; No. 3 Millville will host No. 6 Holy Spirit; and No. 4 Atlantic City will host No. 5 Middle Township.

Girls consolation games on Feb. 20 include Egg Harbor Township at Atlantic Tech, Vineland at Lower Cape May, Absegami at Bridgeton, Oakcrest at Our Lady of Mercy, St. Joseph at Buena and Pleasantville at Cape May Tech. The girls teams will also play additional consolation games on Feb. 23.

The girls semifinals will be on Feb. 21 at St. Augustine Prep and the boys semifinals will be on Feb. 22 at Absegami. The championship doubleheader will be Feb. 24 at Stockton University.

So, there you have it. We may not agree with all the decisions but there should be some exciting basketball coming up.
