ALUMNI NOTEBOOK: Brennan Ray earns NJAC football honors

Catching up with some former Cape May County high school athletes now competing at the college level:

BRENNAN RAY

Brennan Ray (freshman-Montclair State football-LCMR) has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Rookie of the Week. Ray recorded a career-high 12 tackles, including three solos and two for loss, in the Red Hawks’ 17-15 loss at unbeaten Salisbury on Saturday. He also forced a fumble. Ray, a linebacker, currently ranks tied for 10th in the NJAC in total tackles for loss (5.5). Montclair State (5-1 overall, 4-1 NJAC) hosts Frostburg State next weekend. …

Madie Gibson (redshirt junior-Monmouth soccer-LCMR) was recently named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Gibson scored goals in victories over Canisius and Quinnipiac to earn the honor. Gibson also scored in the team’s most recent game, a 4-1 victory over Fairfield on Saturday. She has six goals for the season and 25 for her career. Monmouth (12-3-1 overall, 7-1 MAAC) hosts Niagara on Wednesday. …

Ryan Herlihy (senior-Haverford cross country-MTHS) placed seventh out of 344 finishers with a time of 25:18.8 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Invitational Pre-National race on Saturday. The event was held on the same course that will be used for the Division III National Championships in November. Herlihy placed second among Haverford runners, helping the Fords to a fourth-place finish out of 50 teams. Haverford, ranked fifth in the nation in Division III, is next in action on Oct. 27 at the Centennial Conference Championships. …

RIALEE ALLEN

Rialee Allen (sophomore-LaSalle field hockey-OCHS) posted two goals and Shannon O’Reilly (freshman-LaSalle field hockey-OCHS) added a goal in LaSalle’s recent 9-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn. The Explorers posted a 4-1 win over Richmond in their most recent game on Friday. For the season, Allen has six goals and an assist and O’Reilly has a goal and two assists. …

Jared Irwin (senior-Cabrini soccer-WHS) and Anthony Zampirri (sophomore-Cabrini soccer-WCHS) each played pivotal roles in Cabrini’s 1-0 win over Marywood last Wednesday. Irwin scored the lone goal on a 78th minute penalty kick, while Zampirri made two saves to record his fourth shutout of the season, tops in the Atlantic East Conference. Sal Zampirri (senior-Cabrini soccer-WCHS), Anthony’s older brother, recorded two shots in the win. Cabrini (7-6-1 overall, 2-1 AEC) went on to lose 1-0 to Neumann on Saturday. The Cavaliers next play on Wednesday at Marymount. …

Will Helm (sophomore-Immaculata soccer-WHS) has started 11 games and is one of eight Mighty Mac players to see action in all 15 games so far this season. The defensive midfielder has recorded two shots, one on goal. Immaculata (8-6-1 overall, 3-0 Atlantic East Conference) registered a 2-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy University on Saturday. …

Lauren McNally (junior-Penn State field hockey-OCHS) has seen action in nine games, with eight starts, as a defender for the Nittany Lions so far this season. Penn State was ranked sixth in the country in Division I before a 3-2 road loss at No. 8 Iowa on Friday. The Nittany Lions (9-4 overall, 4-2 Big 10 Conference) were scheduled to play at Northwestern on Sunday. …

WES HILLS

Wes Hills (redshirt senior-Slippery Rock football-WHS) rushed 12 times for 88 yards and a touchdown to help Slippery Rock to a 59-28 victory over Edinboro on Saturday. He also caught one pass for five yards. Hills has scored four touchdowns and is averaging 6.5 yards per carry, with 458 yards on 70 carries. He’s also caught 10 passes for 94 yards. Hills has played in five of the team’s seven games, missing two due to a shoulder injury. Slippery Rock (6-1 overall, 4-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) plays at Clarion next weekend. …

Kelly Hanna (senior-Monmouth field hockey-OCHS) scored her eighth goal of the season in a 6-2 win over Bryant College earlier this month. She is second on the team in goals and in points with 20. …

Joe Fala (junior-Ramapo soccer-MTHS) continued his torrid scoring pace for the Roadrunners by netting his 17th goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against Rutgers-Camden on Saturday. That came one game after he recorded two goals in a 5-0 win over Berkeley. Fala is currently second in the nation in Division III in goal scoring. Ramapo (11-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference) hosts Western Connecticut State on Monday.
