Raiders win 16th South Jersey field hockey championship

By TOM WILLIAMS

The South Jersey championship field hockey trophy is back in Ocean City.

Kelsey Mitchell’s girls (19-3-1) defeated defending champion Clearview, 3-1, today at Carey Stadium to win the championship for the 16th time and the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

Sophia Gresham put the Raiders ahead with a first half goal from Reese Bloomstead off a corner. Early in the second half, Tara McNally added the second goal off another corner with an assist from Chloe Prettyman. Molly Reardon scored the third goal with an assist from Jaclyn Charbonneau. Clearview’s Grace Trovato lobbed one into the net late in the game to create the final score.

Ocean City, ranked No. 15 in the state by NJ.com, will play the Central Jersey champion – No. 3 ranked Moorestown (20-1-1) – on Tuesday in a state semifinal at either Egg Harbor Township or Hightstown High School. Moorestown defeated Burlington Township, 7-0, today.

The Raiders, seeded No. 1 in South Jersey Group 3, defeated Cherry Hill West, 10-0, and Absegami, 4-0, to reach the final. Clearview, seeded No. 3, defeated Timber Creek, 5-0, and upset No. 2 seed Mainland, 3-2, to get to the final. Clearview had beaten OCHS, 1-0, in last year’s South Jersey final and went on to win the state title.
