Middle to honor ’93-’94 state title teams, retire number of star player

By BRIAN CUNNIFF

The Middle Township High School athletic department has a special evening planned for Monday, Jan. 21.

The school is set to honor its back-to-back state Group II championship teams from 1993 and 1994 and will also retire the uniform number of Stephano Anderson, one of the stars of the 1993 team.

The festivities are set to take place in between Middle’s girl-boy basketball doubleheader against Lower Cape May. The girls game is set for 5 p.m., with the boys game tentatively scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

STEPHANO ANDERSON

Middle’s 1993 team is considered to be the best in school history. With Anderson and LaMarr Greer leading the way, the Panthers not only captured the state Group II title but also won two games in the Tournament of Champions and advanced to the TOC final, where the Panthers lost to powerful St. Anthony.

Anderson, who wore No. 23 at Middle, was known for his high-flying exploits that saw him often playing above the rim. He’s considered to be one of the best – if not the best – dunkers in Cape-Atlantic League history. But aside from his off-the-charts athleticism, the 6-3 Anderson was also a terrific all-around player who finished his high school career with 1,880 points. He averaged 21.4 points and 9.4 rebounds during his senior season. Anderson was a two-time first-team CAL all-star and was a first-team South Jersey all-star selection as a senior. In addition to the state title team in 1993, Anderson was also part of South Jersey championship teams in 1990 and 1992.

Today, Anderson lives locally and works for the City of Wildwood.

There will be no advance ticket sales for the event. All tickets will be sold at the door.
