Philly high school football coming to the beach

The Jersey Shore will again be the site of multiple high school football games involving teams from the Philadelphia area.

Four high school football games involving southeastern Pennsylvania teams will take place in the area Labor Day weekend. Three games are scheduled for Maxwell Field in Wildwood, with another set for Carey Stadium in Ocean City.

A decades-long tradition continues with the games at Maxwell Field. What was once dubbed the “Beach Bowl” game has morphed into multiple contests each year.

This year’s three games in Wildwood will be played over two days. On Friday, Sept. 1, Conwell-Egan of the Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division and Archbishop Carroll of the PCL Red Division will play at 4 p.m. Then on Saturday, Sept. 2, longtime rivals Roman Catholic, of the PCL Red, and West Catholic, of the PCL Blue, will play at 11:30 a.m. Later on Saturday, Frankford High of the Philadelphia Public League will take on Neumann-Goretti of the PCL Blue at 4 p.m.

The game at Carey Stadium will also take place Saturday, with Penn Charter of the Inter-Ac League facing Lansdale Catholic of the PCL Blue at 10 a.m. Penn Charter is the alma mater of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and Notre Dame offensive lineman Mike McGlinchey, who’s projected to be a first-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

The Labor Day weekend games will be the second of the season for some of the involved teams. The Pennsylvania high school football season begins as early as Aug. 25-26.
