STONE HARBOR – The Wildwood Catholic High School girls soccer team will have to rely heavily on its younger players this season.

The Crusaders don’t really have a choice, with seven freshmen in the starting lineup.

Those young players came through on Tuesday against Cape May Tech. The Crusaders received goals from three freshmen in a 4-1 victory over Cape May Tech.

“We lost 11 kids from last year,” Wildwood Catholic coach Kara Saunders said, “so it’s definitely a full new start for us.”

Marianna Papazoglou, Riley Kane and Monica Orlandini were the freshmen who tallied for Wildwood Catholic (1-1). Senior Julianna Roche netted the other.

“We’re trying to remain competitive this year and stay on track with that,” Saunders said. “There are definitely some teams on our schedule we can compete with and against the bigger teams we’ll try our best to put pressure on them. I want to see these freshmen step up and hold up under pressure.

“It’s great to see three freshmen score. This is the most freshmen that have started for us since I’ve been here,” added Saunders, in her fourth year as the team’s head coach. “Hopefully this means our program is growing.”

Cape May Tech (1-1) received its goal from Madison Ruisch.
