LCM runner wins CAL championship race, Raider girls take team title

Will Berger of Lower Cape May won the Cape May County cross country championship on Thursday at county park.

Will Berger of Lower Cape May won the 2017 Cape-Atlantic League championship meet in Millville on Thursday.

Lower Cape May Regional High School senior Will Berger is now three for three so far in championship meet season.

Berger, who earlier this fall won the Big Five and Cape May County meets, placed first out of 110 runners at the Cape-Atlantic League Championships held in Millville Thursday afternoon.

Berger posted a time of 16 minutes, 9.3 seconds to finish a little less than two seconds ahead of second-place Nick Berenotto of Mainland (16:11.16).

Ocean City senior Jesse Schmeizer placed third in 16:12.97.

Mainland had five of the top nine finishers to easily win the team championship over Ocean City.

Other Cape May County runners in the top 15 included Ocean City’s Anthony Conte (16:49.76), Korey Greene (16:55.71) and Luke Kramer (16:55.98), who were 13th through 15th, respectively.

The Raiders’ Tyler Green (16:56.40) and Gavyn Fox (17:03.42) were right behind their teammates in 16th and 17th places, respectively.

Cape May Tech’s Leo Zaccaria was 22nd in 17:11.86 and Wildwood Catholic’s Chris Johnson was 31st in 17:32.6.

Ocean City senior Alexa Weber was the top Cape May County finisher in the girls race and led the Raiders to a narrow team victory. Weber placed third in 18:48.51. Mainland Regional star Alyssa Aldridge won the race in 18:06.16 and Millville’s Raelynne Miller was second in 18:39.33.

Ocean City’s Casey McLees placed fifth in 19:10.16 and teammate Alexa Palmieri was sixth in 19:18.86.

Wildwood Catholic freshman Julia Sorensen was 11th in 20:02.24. Ocean City’s Michaela Baker finished 14th in 20:26.89.

The Raiders scored 40 points to edge second-place Egg Harbor Township by two points in team scoring. Wildwood Catholic was fourth with 106 points.

The girls race had 83 finishers.
