Three players, one team up for induction into LCM Athletic Hall of Fame

Three former star athletes and a championship team are scheduled for induction into the Lower Cape May Regional High School Athletic Hall of Fame later this year.

Robert Jackson (class of 1974), Carol Faison (1975) and Gabrielle Whalen (2010) are the individual inductees. The 1957-58 Cape May High School boys basketball team will also be inducted.

Jackson, a star track athlete at Lower Cape May, was a medalist at the county, league and South Jersey levels. He was the captain and leading scorer for the spring track team in 1974. He leaped 6 feet, 4 ¼ inches in the high jump and had a best toss of 182-2 in the javelin. Jackson was also a key contributor to the boys basketball team.

Faison was one of the school’s all-time great girls basketball players. The 1975 graduate was the first female player in school history to score more than 1,000 career points. She finished with 1,132 career points and still holds the school record for most points in a game with 53.

Whalen was one of the top track and field competitors in school history. She was the state shot put champion as a junior in 2009 and was a multiple first team Cape-Atlantic League all-star selection.

The 1957-58 Cape May High School boys basketball team is one of the most accomplished in school history. The team won the South Jersey Group I championship and was a state semifinalist.

The induction ceremony will be held Friday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel on Beach Drive in Cape May. The event is open to the public. Cost to attend is $28 per person and includes buffet dinner and cash bar. For more information or to reserve tickets, contact Lower Cape May athletic director Erik Simonsen at 884-3475 ext. 296 or via email at simonsene@lcmrschools.com.
