OCHS girls soccer champions highlighted great fall for Raider teams

By TOM WILLIAMS

Ocean City High School’s championship fall season came to an end last night when the girls soccer team lost to Allentown, 6-1, in the NJSIAA State Group 3 Semifinal in Toms River.

The Raiders fell behind, 5-0, before junior Abbey Kampmeyer scored her first goal of the season for OCHS.

Kelly Halliday’s team (19-4-1), above, completed a season in which it won the school’s second South Jersey title, tied the school record for wins in a season, played in the South Jersey Coaches Invitational and won the Cape-Atlantic League’s National Conference title.

Trish Henry’s girls cross country team (8-0), above, ended its season on Saturday with a seventh place finish in the NJSIAA State Group 3 Meet in Holmdel. But those Raiders were South Jersey champions and champions of the CAL’s American Conference.

Matt Purdue’s boys cross country team (9-0), above, stretched its dual meet win streak to 80 this year while winning the CAL-American. The Raider runners finished fourth in South Jersey to qualify for the state meet and finished second in the Disney Invitational in Florida.

Aaron Bogushefsky’s boys soccer team (18-3-1) won the CAL-National, qualified for the Coaches Invitational and reached the South Jersey final for the 16th time, losing to Mainland, 2-1.

Kelsey Mitchell’s field hockey team (14-8) finished second in the CAL-American and reached the South Jersey final for the 10th straight year and the 20th time overall.

Samantha DiMatteo’s girls tennis team (12-9) reached the semifinals of the South Jersey Group 3 Tournament before losing at Hammonton, 3-2.

The only team still competing is Kevin Smith’s football team (6-3) which finished third in the West Jersey Football League’s Independence Division and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in nine years. The Raiders only three losses were to teams playing this weekend in the NJSIAA semifinals – St. Joseph, Cedar Creek and Delsea.

That one final game this fall is on Thanksgiving morning when OCHS hosts Pleasantville in what should be a very good game.

And, as you can see, Ocean City sports fans can be thankful about the 2017 fall season.
