The Ocean City High School boys basketball team has accomplished something after the first six games of this season that has not been done since 1983-84.

The Raiders have five players averaging in double figures.

Going into Wednesday’s game at Absegami, junior Luke Varallo (11.5 ppg) leads John Bruno’s team in scoring, followed by senior Issac Robertson (11.3), junior Donovan Graham (10.8), senior Jake McQuarrie (10.5) and senior Tom Jamison (10.3). Junior Joe Sacco, who leads the team in assists, is also close to double figures at 8.0 per game. There has never been a time when an OCHS team had six players scoring in double figures.

The 1983-84 team, coached by Jack Boyd, had five in double figures a number of times throughout the season and finished with four – Gene Watts (16.7), Homer Baker (15.2), Dennis Jones (12.2) and Joe Jones (10.3). Bob Straub finished with a 9.6 average.

Two other Ocean City teams finished the season with four players averaging in double figures.

Bruno’s 1995-96 team included Steffon Davis (15.8), Sharif Thompson (13.4), Quan McCray (13.2) and Mike Ludwig (12.3). The fifth player was Scott Lipford (7.3).

And Dixie Howell’s 1959-60 team included Ken Leary (16.4), Gray Satrappe (16.3), Jim Bernosky (14.7) and Warner Christy (10.6). The fifth player was Butch Krattenmaker (8.7).

After Wednesday’s game with Absegami, the Raiders will be home for four straight games – Middle Township, Lower Cape May, Holy Spirit and Clearview.
