WILDWOOD – The boys from the Jersey Shore proved they could play basketball with some of the better teams from Philadelphia.

Wildwood Catholic beat previously unbeaten Father Judge, a blueblood from the Philadelphia Catholic League, 43-33, to claim victory in the Doug DeWeese Memorial Bracket at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic.

Judge (8-1) opened a six-point lead midway through the first quarter but Wildwood Catholic outscored its opponent 19-10 over the remainder of the half to grab a 23-20 lead at the break. Wildwood Catholic then held Judge to only three field goals in the second half and opened a lead as large as 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Bowling Green commit Caleb Fields made 6 of 10 shots from the field and 5 of 6 attempts from the line and scored a game-high 17 points for Wildwood Catholic (6-0). His brother, Charles, added 12 points, a game-best 10 rebounds and a game-best three steals.

Tom Quarry scored 12 points for Judge.

The bracket was named in honor of the father of current Wildwood Catholic coach Dave DeWeese, who also picked up his 250th career win with his team’s victory.

Wildwood Catholic shot a respectable 16 for 38 from the floor (42.1 percent) and out-rebounded Judge, 30-26.
