MIDDLE TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

Mascot: Panthers

Conference: Cape-Atlantic United

2016-17 Record: 11-15

Head coach: Anthony Farmer (second season, 11-15 career)

Assistant coaches: Andy Ludman, Tyriq Gaskins, Ryan Babynew, Tom Feraco Jr.

Returning players: Seniors – Brian Guzman (5-9 G), Mack Selby (6-2 F); Juniors – A.J. Baez (5-9 G), Jalen Freeman (6-1 G), Cameron Hamer (6-0 G/F), Coley Holton (6-4 F).

Top newcomers: Senior – Zen TeHira (6-0 G); Sophomore – Romaine Rhett (6-1 G); Freshmen – DaSean Lopez (6-2 F), Marcus Pierce (5-11 G), Dave Zarfati (5-10 G).

Strengths: Defense, athleticism, experience

Weaknesses: Size, perimeter shooting

Outlook: After enduring a slow start last season, Middle finished by winning seven out of its final nine games and hopes to carry that late-season success into the new season. Freeman (15.1 ppg) is one of the CAL’s best guards and very well could be the best defensive player in the CAL. Freeman, Selby, Hamer, Holton and Guzman all saw significant varsity time last season and should be better for the experience. Expect Middle to produce a winning season and challenge for a berth in the CAL playoff tournament.

Season opener: Friday vs. Absegami, 7 pm
