Both OCHS basketball teams move into Group 3 quarterfinals

By TOM WILLIAMS

Ocean City High School’s basketball teams swept through the first round of the NJSIAA Group 3 Tournament Monday night and created another girl-boy doubleheader on Wednesday in the Dixie Howell Gymnasium.

Tonight the Ocean City girls used 16 first half points by junior Danielle Donoghue to build a lead and go on to defeat Toms River South, 55-31. It was the Raiders’ ninth straight win in the South Jersey tournament over three seasons. And the boys followed with a 70-44 win over Camden Tech with Tom Jamison’s 17 points leading three in double figures.

Those two wins moved the Raiders into the quarterfinals.

On Wednesday at 5 p.m., Paul Baruffi’s girls will host Gloucester Tech, a winner over Camden Tech in the first round. And, at 7 p.m., John Bruno’s OCHS boys will take on Winslow Township, an easy winner over Hammonton in the opening round.

The OCHS girls ran out to an 11-0 lead with Donoghue scoring eight of those points. She finished with 18 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists. Sophomore Emma Finnegan scored 14 points and had four rebounds. Junior Savanna Holt had five points and six rebounds and junior Tori Rolls grabbed five boards.

Jamison made 8 of 10 shots in the boys game for his 17 points, also adding four rebounds and three assists. Jamison talked about the win in an exclusive video interview, below.

Donovan Graham scored 14 points on 6 for 9 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots. Jake McQuarrie had 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and four assists.

The Raiders shot 51 percent and pressured Camden Tech into 30 turnovers. The Warriors, who set a school record this year with 208 three-pointers, managed only three in 18 shots.

FREE THROWS: Winslow Township, coached by former Holy Spirit star Wayne Nelson, is only 10-17 and they do not have any impressive wins. But the Eagles played a tough schedule.
