Cape May County individuals among honorees at basketball summit

Lower Cape May coach Scott Holden (Coach of Year, Wildwood senior Kyion Flanders (scholarship winner) and Ocean City coach John Bruno (Spirit Award) were among the award winners at the South Jersey Coach Official Summit held at the Tropicana Resort and Casino in Atlantic City on Saturday.

Two current coaches, one former coach, a player and an official from Cape May County were among the honorees at the South Jersey Coach-Official Basketball Summit awards banquet Saturday evening at the Tropicana Resort and Casino in Atlantic City.

The summit, hosted by South Jersey Basketball Summit Inc., was created six years ago as an initiative to improve relations among high school basketball coaches and officials.

Kyion Flanders, a senior guard from Wildwood, was given one of two Paul Rodio Boys Scholarships, receiving $1,000 toward his college education.

Ocean City High School boys coach John Bruno was given the Lou Grilli Spirit Award and Lower Cape May coach Scott Holden was named the organization’s Jim Mogan/Ken Leary Coach of the Year.

Former Wildwood High School girls basketball coach Dave Troiano was given the John Pierantozzi Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lance Bailey, a Lower Township resident and teacher at Lower Cape May Regional High School, was also recognized as one of two cadets of the year for Cumb-Cape Board of Officials 196.

In addition to its awards banquet, South Jersey Basketball Summit Inc. also hosts a fundraising concert/barbecue and this year restarted the Seagull Classic high school basketball showcase event to raise money for its scholarship endeavors.
