Boys lacrosse stats show why Ocean City-Mainland game is so big

Boys lacrosse is coming down to the final weeks in the Cape-Atlantic League and, on Friday, the two teams who are still undefeated in league play will meet in Linwood.

Three-time defending champion Ocean City and Mainland will likely decide the league championship in this game and, when you look at the CAL statistical leaders in boys lacrosse, it isn’t hard to see why these two teams have risen to the top.

Ocean City junior Christian Kuhn leads the CAL in assists and his classmate, Bill Kroeger, is tops in ground balls and faceoff percentage. Mainland senior Hunter Faunce has the league’s best save percentage. And Mustang senior Vince Giunta is right behind Kuhn in assists.

In addition, three of the CAL’s top four in offensive points are from these two schools, as are five of the top six in assists.

Senior Brian Devinney of Cedar Creek has been the top offensive player with 47 goals and 27 assists for 74 offensive points. And his teammate – sophomore goalie John Nawrocki – has had to make 186 saves.

The NJSIAA Tournaments are still to come and there is lots of good lacrosse left this season. But Friday’s Ocean City-Mainland game in Linwood is the one fans have been waiting for. The Raiders have won the last five meetings over the past three seasons, three by one point and one in overtime. And there is no reason to expect this game won’t be just as exciting.
