LONGPORT — Thanks to first-place finishes in two of the three events, the Longport Beach Patrol won the South Jersey Lifeguard Championships Friday.

Atlantic County patrols dominated the competition. For Longport, 16-year-old rookie lifeguard Joe Tepper won the swim and Mike McGrath steered to victory in the singles row for the second time in three years as the host patrol scored 13 points in team competition.

Margate, which got a doubles row victory from Chris Graves and Chuck Gowdy, finished second with nine points and Atlantic City was third with seven points.

Cape May’s John Knies and Jake Smith placed second in the doubles row for the highest finish in an event by a Cape May County competitor(s). Knies was also fifth in the singles row.

Ocean City’s Maggie Wallace, bidding to become the first female to win an event in the 79 years of the South Jersey Championships, placed third in the swim.

Avalon’s Erich Wolf, the 2017 singles rowing champ, placed fourth in the event.
