Temple, Villanova, Rowan football teams to each visit Cape May County

By BRIAN CUNNIFF

Three Philadelphia area college football teams will be taking trips to the beach later this month.

Division III Rowan University and Division I FCS Villanova are returning to Ocean City, while Division I FBS Temple University will visit the Cape May area and the Wildwoods Boardwalk.

Temple will be the first to visit. The Owls have made August promotional visits to Cape May County in the past. But this time, the team will actually practice in the area sometime between 8 a.m. and noon this Saturday (Aug. 11) at Lower Cape May Regional High School, although the workout will be closed to the public. From there, Owls players and coaches will hand out posters and sign autographs on the Wildwoods Boardwalk at a time and specific location to be determined, as per a Temple athletics spokesperson.

Villanova will hold a scrimmage at Carey Stadium in Ocean City for the second straight year on Friday, Aug. 17, at 10:30 a.m.  The contest is free and open to the public. Following the scrimmage, Villanova players will sign autographs at the Ocean City Music Pier.

“There are quite a few Villanovans who have houses down the shore so we came up with the idea last year to take a day and have an open practice or scrimmage at the beach,” Villanova coach Mark Ferrante said in a story on the school’s athletics website. “This gives us a chance to connect with our fans who are enjoying the summer at the shore and it also gives our team a break from the normal grind of preseason camp.”

Rowan will hold its annual Brown & Gold Scrimmage the next day (Saturday, Aug. 18) at 10 a.m., also at Carey Stadium. The scrimmage is free and open to the public.

Temple and Villanova open the season against one another on Saturday, Sept. 1, at noon at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Rowan begins its season at Widener on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m.
