OCHS girls runners win Shootout – both Raider teams host Mainland Tuesday

By TOM WILLIAMS

GLASSBORO- Ocean City’s girls cross country team finished first today in the South Jersey Shootout at Rowan University.

The Raiders totaled 30 points to beat second place Mainland by 10. Shawnee finished third, 19 points behind.

Ocean City sophomore Alexa Palmieri finished third in the “stud” race (each team’s top three runners) led only by two runners from Shawnee. Junior Casey McLees was eighth and senior Brooke Farr finished 11th.

In the race featuring each team’s fourth through seventh runners, OCHS junior Becca Miller finished first, sophomore Isabella Padula was ninth and junior Laney Guida finished 10th.

Ocean City’s cross country teams will both get a shot at taking control of the Cape-Atlantic League’s American Conference race on Tuesday.

Trish Henry’s girls (3-0), winners of 63 of their last 64 meets, will take on Mainland and Matt Purdue’s boys (3-0), who have a 91-meet win streak, will also run against the Mustangs. The meets will finish at Carey Stadium.

Tuesday’s winners will clearly be the teams to beat in this season’s conference race. Some believe that the OCHS boys, led by all stars Anthony Conte, a junior, and senior Gavyn Fox, actually enter the meet as the underdog to Mainland, which returned three all stars from last year.
