OCHS seniors A.J. Campbell, Alex Vitola picks colleges

By TOM WILLIAMS

School opens this week at Ocean City High School and two more seniors have decided on their college plans.

A.J. Campbell, who set a new school pitching record while also contributing as a hitter and third baseman, will continue his baseball career at Frostburg (MD) State.

And Alex Vitola, who was second on the OCHS softball team with a .418 average and four stolen bases, will attend Flagler (FL) College.

Campbell finished the season with a 3-0 record, a 0.66 earned run average and 6.87 strikeouts per seven innings. His ERA broke a school record that had stood for 34 years.

Frostburg is an NCAA Division 3 school located in Frostburg, Maryland – just below the Pennsylvania border about halfway between Baltimore and Pittsburgh. The Bobcats play baseball in the Capital Athletic Conference. The team was 23-14 last season. Frostburg plays football in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Vitola scored 20 runs for the Raiders as the team’s starting second baseman. She switched from hitting right-handed to left handed before her junior year.

Flagler College is an NCAA Division 2 school located in St. Augustine, Florida. The Saints play in the Peach Belt Conference and were 26-27 last season.

Campbell and Vitola join three other OCHS student-athletes who have made college commitments.

Senior Brandon Lashley has agreed to pitch for NCAA Division 1 Stony Brook on Long Island, New York.

Senior Danielle Donoghue will play lacrosse for NCAA Division 1 Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

And sophomore Faith Slimmer has verbally committed to play soccer at Division 1 Rutgers University.

There will be more to come.
