ALUMNI NOTEBOOK: MAAC titles for Gibson, Hanna

Catching up with some former Cape May County high school athletes now competing at the college level:

MATT BROWN

Matt Brown (freshman-Neumann soccer-MTHS) started at defender and helped the Knights win the inaugural America East Conference championship game with a 3-1 decision over Cabrini on Saturday. Brown is one of only two Neumann players to start all 17 of the team’s games so far this season. He has scored one goal. Jared Irwin (senior-Cabrini soccer-WHS) and Sal Zampirri (senior-Cabrini soccer-WCHS) each played their final college games in the loss. Irwin scored Cabrini’s goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Anthony Zampirri (sophomore-Cabrini soccer-WCHS) stopped two shots in goal in the title game loss. Ray Wilson (sophomore-Cabrini soccer-MTHS) and Beck Lindsay (freshman-Cabrini soccer-WCHS) also saw action in the game for Cabrini.  Irwin posted three goals this season and 23 for his career, while Sal Zampirri posted a goal and an assist this season and finished with two career goals. …

Ryan Herlihy (senior-Haverford cross country-MTHS) was recently named a first All-Centennial Conference selection for the third straight year. Herlihy recently helped the Fords win their fifth straight Centennial Conference championship by placing third in the 8K meet with a time of 25:29.2. Haverford, ranked fourth nationally in Division III by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, will next run in the Mideast Regional Championships on Nov. 10 at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa. …

Kelly Hanna (senior-Monmouth field hockey-OCHS) played all 70 minutes in the Hawks’ 2-1 win over Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. The victory gives Monmouth (13-6) an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I Tournament. For the season, Hanna has posted nine goals and eight assists while starting all 19 games. Monmouth has won the MAAC conference tournament three times in the past five seasons. …

Madie Gibson (junior-Monmouth soccer-LCMR) scored the opening goal on a penalty kick and later added two assists as the Hawks romped over Siena, 7-1, to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title game for the third straight year Sunday evening in West Long Branch. Gibson, recently named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year, has posted eight goals and eight assists for the season. She has 27 goals and 26 assists for her career. The conference championship gives Monmouth (16-3-1) an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. …

Britney Stein (sophomore-Stockton field hockey-OCHS) was recently named a first team New Jersey Athletic Conference all-star. The forward has posted five goals and three assists while leading the Ospreys (12-6) in shots on goal with 22. Stein has started all 18 games for Stockton this fall and is already tied for 10th in program history with 12 goals, with two seasons yet to play. Teammate Issy Gilhooley (sophomore-Stockton field hockey-OCHS) has played in all 18 games (17 starts) at defender and has posted one assist. Stockton is slated to begin play in the ECAC Tournament this week. …

Gary Nagle (freshman-Ursinus wrestling-MTHS) placed third at 174 pounds in the season-opening Messiah Invitational at Messiah College on Saturday. He lost his opening match in overtime but then rallied with four straight wins, including one by pin, to finish in third place in the weight class. Ursinus placed fourth in team competition. …

Brennan Ray (freshman-Montclair State football-LCMR) had four solo tackles, two assisted tackles and a forced fumble to help the Red Hawks to a 28-14 victory over Rowan on Saturday. For the season, he is third on the team in total tackles with 56, leads the team in quarterback hurries with five and is tied for the team lead in forced fumbles with two. …

Joe Fala (junior-Ramapo soccer-MTHS) and the Roadrunners lost, 5-0, to Montclair State in the New Jersey Athletic Conference title game on Friday. Fala, recently named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Year, went into the weekend leading all of Division III men’s college soccer in goals with 25. He also has six assists and has posted a season total of 56 points. …

Billy Farnan (freshman-Fairleigh Dickinson soccer-OCHS) appeared in 15 games, with five starts, and posted a goal and an assist for the Devils, who finished 5-12 overall, 2-5 in the MAC Freedom Conference. …

Abby Thompson (sophomore-Limestone field hockey-MTHS) was used as a substitute in a 9-6 victory on Saturday that gave the Saints the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas regular-season championship. Thompson has seen action in 11 of the team’s 14 games and has recorded one goal and one assist. Limestone (11-3 overall, 8-0 SACC) is currently ranked 10th nationally in Division II. The team is currently on a 10-game winning streak. …

Nik Anagnou (freshman-Rowan College at Gloucester County soccer-MTHS) made seven saves in his team’s 3-2 loss to Bucks County College in the opening round of the Region XIX Tournament. RCGC finished the season at 6-6-4.

Christian Rafter (sophomore-Rosemont soccer-MTHS) posted two goals and a team-best four assists for the Ravens this fall. He also led the team in shots with 30. Rosemont finished the season at 4-13-1. …

Kevin Santiago (senior-College of St. Elizabeth soccer-WHS) was one of six players to see action in all 17 games this fall for the Eagles. He made 15 starts at defender and recorded two shots. College of St. Elizabeth finished 3-14 overall, 0-11 in the Northeastern Athletic Conference. …

Andrew Donoghue (sophomore-TCNJ football-OCHS) completed 10 of 16 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions in the team’s 38-13 loss to Christopher Newport on Saturday. He also ran twice for 11 yards in the game. TCNJ is 2-7 overall, 2-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, on the season. …

Grace Suttera (freshman-Wilmington soccer-LCMR) saw action in 12 games and posted an assist for the Wildcats, who finished 8-10-1 overall, 7-4-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. …

AMANDA NUNAN

Amanda Nunan (sophomore-Tennessee swimming-OCHS) won the 500 freestyle in 4:51.40 to help the Volunteers sweep a double dual meet over Purdue and Wisconsin on Friday. Tennessee entered the meet ranked 24th in the nation. …

Maggie Wallace (freshman-Indiana swimming-OCHS) placed sixth in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:06.96 and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.67 as the Hoosiers swept a recent dual meet over Texas and Florida. Indiana is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation. …

Will Berger (freshman-Rutgers cross country-LCMR) posted a time of 28:23.4 in the 8K race at the Big Ten Championships recently.
