The Middle Township High School girls basketball team breezed to a victory while the girls team from Lower Cape May and the boys team from Middle Township each lost first-round contests as the state basketball tournament began Monday.
Middle jumped to a 21-9 after one quarter and rolled to a 66-36 win over Pt. Pleasant Boro in a South Jersey Group II game. Kira Sides poured in 21 points, Kate Herlihy added 17 points and Aubrey Hunter chipped in 12 points for Middle (22-5).
The Lady Panthers move on to face Cinnaminson in the second round on Wednesday. Cinnaminson was a 60-40 winner over Lower Cape May Monday. Winter Favre scored 20 points for the Lady Tigers, who finished at 8-19.
And in boys basketball, Middle dropped a tough 47-42 decision at Pennsauken Tech. Sophomore Marcus Pierce poured in 23 points in the loss for the Panthers (9-16).
