Farmer won’t return as Middle Township hoops coach

Middle Township High School will have a new head boys basketball coach next season.

The school announced Wednesday that Anthony Farmer will not return for a fourth season as coach.

“Head Boys Basketball Coach Anthony Farmer has been relieved of his basketball coaching duties at Middle Township High School,” Middle Township school superintendent Dr. David Salvo said in a prepared statement. “We are thankful for the time and commitment he demonstrated the past three years and wish him much success in his future endeavors. The school district will follow its standard hiring procedures to assign a new Head Basketball Coach at Middle Township High School.”

When contacted, Farmer declined comment, other than to say, “I wish the best for Middle.”

Farmer posted a record of 33-44 in his three seasons. He took over under somewhat difficult circumstances, following a legend in Tom Feraco, who had won 719 career games, three state titles, nine South Jersey championships and numerous league, conference and division championships in 35 seasons.

Middle finished 9-16 against a very difficult schedule this season. The team lost two of its better players prior to the season. Senior Jalen Freeman transferred to Pleasantville prior to the school year and senior Coley Holton suffered a season-ending knee injury less than a week prior to the regular season.

Middle’s leading scorer for the season was a sophomore, guard Marcus Pierce.

Farmer was a star player at St. Augustine Prep and Rutgers University during his playing days. He served as an assistant coach at St. Augustine prior to being hired at Middle Township prior to the 2016-17 season.
