Middle advances to sectional semifinal round

The Middle Township High School boys tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the South Jersey Group I Tournament with Monday’s 4-1 win over Haddon Township. The Panthers also won the Cape May Tennis Club Round Robin Tournament over the weekend. The Middle Township High School boys tennis team has advanced to the South Jersey Group I semifinal round after a 4-1 victory over Haddon Township early Monday afternoon. The match was played indoors at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club.

Middle, the No. 3 seed I the tournament, took three matches in straight sets. Max Gilbert scored a 6-1, 6-1, decision at first singles and Justin Price gained a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, result at third singles. Middle also won both doubles matches, wit Teo Dimitrov and John Leahy posting a 6-2, 6-1, win at first doubles and Owen Carlson and Colby Watts scratching out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, win at second doubles.

Middle (14-2), the third seed in the tournament, will face No. 2 Pennsville or No. 10 Haddon Heights in the next round on Thursday. The winner will play for the South Jersey title early next week. Middle is the defending South Jersey Group I champion.

Middle also won the Cape May Tennis Club Round Robin Tournament held Saturday.  Gilbert, Nick Gibboni (second singles) and the team of Dimitrov and Leahy each won their flights to lead the Panthers to the team title.

Other participants in the tournament included Lower Cape May, Wildwood Catholic, Jenkintown (Pa.) and Neshaminy.
