LANE OWENS

Some capped brilliant careers with one final performance, while others showed that better things may still be to come at Saturday’s NJSIAA Track and Field Meet of Champions.

Five athletes in individual events and four more from a relay team represented Cape May County high schools at the event, which was held at Northern Burlington High School.

Junior Lane Owens of Ocean City posted the highest finish of a Cape May County athlete in the meet. He finished fifth in the boys javelin toss after qualifying for the MOC as a wild card. Owens recorded a distance of 185 feet, 8 inches. Owens had finished fourth in the event at the state Group III meet and second at the South Jersey Group III meet.

Also from Ocean City, senior Sophia Gresham placed 20th in the girls long jump at a distance of 16 feet, 6.5 inches.

Middle Township freshman Keira Phillips finished 29th in the 400 hurdles. Phillips, the lone freshman to compete in the event, recorded a time of 1:05.64.

LEO ZACCARIA

Wildwood’s Leo Zaccaria competed in the boys 800-meter race. The senior finished in 22nd place with a time of 2:00.97.
