Szczur earns Triple A Player of Week honors

An injury suffered in spring training prevented Matt Szczur from playing at the start of the season.

But now 17 games into his season, Szczur has been scorching the ball for the Triple A Reno Aces.

The 2007 Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for the period of May 27 through June 2, the league announced Monday.

Szczur posted 12 hits in 22 at bats (.545) with three home runs, 11 RBI and eight runs scored last week.

For the season, is hitting .361 with four home runs and 15 RBI in 61 at bats. He has an OPS of 1.062.

Reno was off Monday. The Aces are scheduled to open a three-game series with Nashville on Tuesday.

Szczur was a fifth-round draft selection by the Chicago Cubs in 2010. After reaching the majors in 2014, he played parts of four seasons with the Cubs before joining the San Diego Padres early in the 2017 season. He played 57 games with the Padres during the 2018 season before being designated for assignment and finishing the season at Triple A.

Szczur signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was assigned to Reno prior to this season.

Szczur is a career .231 hitter in 589 at bats in the majors. He holds a career .284 batting average in the minors.
