Barber, Fenton, Sides named to all-star teams at national lacrosse tournament

Middle Township’s Madison Barber and Kira Sides and Ocean City’s Abbey Fenton were each named to girls ’20-21 all-star teams at the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic this week in Frederica, Del.

Barber and Sides were named from Team New Jersey, while Fenton competed for Team Long Island. The teams were two of 11 to compete earlier this at the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic, which, according to its website, brings together 2,000 elite athletes from across the country representing various age groups for a summertime tournament. The tournament, which is reported to draw more than 200 college scouts, is played at DE Turf, a sports facility that features 12 synthetic turf fields.

Barber and Sides were each named to the National all-star team, while Fenton was placed onto the American all-star team. The National team scored a narrow 8-7 victory in the contest played Wednesday afternoon.

All three were among the top players in South Jersey last season. Barber posted 54 goals and a team-high 69 assists and Sides recorded a team-high 105 goals and 37 assists for Middle, the Cape-Atlantic National Conference champion in 2019. Fenton went 19-3 with 123 saves as a goalkeeper, helping Ocean City win the CAL American Conference title.

Sides has committed to play college lacrosse at Division I LaSalle University. Barber and Fenton have each yet to announce their college plans.

Lower Cape May’s Maddie Schiffbauer also competed at the tournament for Team New Jersey in the 2022 girls division.
