Bill Gemmel (1943-2019) played shortstop for Dixie Howell in the early 1960s on a pair of Cape-Atlantic League championship teams. Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Linwood back then. This was before Mainland Regional opened so Linwood residents attended OCHS. Gemmel went to Wagner and NYU, became very successful in international banking and was married for 55 years to a girl he met in high school, the former Jill Hammersley. He was another part of the OCHS success story in sports.
