Byers, Barrios, Toney, Manning & Henry among CAL football scoring leaders

By TOM WILLIAMS

St. Joseph senior Jada Byers has tied Ocean City graduate Kevin Sinclair for most career touchdowns by a football player at a Cape-Atlantic League school and increased his career point total to 554 points. That is the most by a CAL player and 12 points behind Paulsboro grad Isaac Redman for third most all-time in South Jersey history. St. Joe has regular season games left with Timber Creek and Holy Spirit, plus the NJSIAA Non-Public 2 playoffs.

But Byers isn’t the only player putting up big scoring numbers.

Cedar Creek senior Lou Barrios has 20 touchdown passes to five different receivers. The record for a CAL quarterback is 27 by Mainland’s Brent Caprio in 2008. Barrios has already tied the CAL single-game mark of five in one game two different times this season.

Junior Jonathan Toney of Vineland caught three TDs on Friday increasing his season total to seven, best among current CAL receivers. The single-season record is 17 by Buena’s Kenny Miles in 2008.

Junior Taylor Manning of Cedar Creek leads CAL kickers with 32 points – 26 PATs and two field goals. He is one point ahead of Ocean City sophomore Brendan McGonigle. The single-season record for kicking points by a CAL player is 72 by Jim Galea of Hammonton in 2000.

Freshman Ja’Briel Mace of Mainland has scored 84 points this season. The record for most varsity points scored by a CAL freshman is 92 by Higel Jones of Holy Spirit in 2008.

And senior Keon Henry of Pleasantville has three return TDs – two punts and one kickoff. That is not only the most by a CAL player but more than any other CAL team.

Ocean City (36.7) has scored the most points per game and allowed the fewest (6.8) among the 17 CAL football teams playing in the West Jersey Football League. Twelve of those 17 teams, by the way, are currently in the NJSIAA playoff picture, as you can see here.

There are lots more individual and team numbers to see. Check out all those who are among the tops in scoring entering this weekend here.
