Jada Byers is on record-setting journey

By TOM WILLIAMS

About the only thing Jada Byers hasn’t done on the football field is kick a field goal. But those three points are all the St. Joseph senior needs to become the all-time career leader in points scored at a Cape-Atlantic League school.

Byers enters Saturday’s game in Vineland with 530 career points. The most ever scored by a CAL player was 532 by Ocean City’s Kevin Sinclair, who last played in 1996.

Byers has scored 83 touchdowns in his four seasons (Sinclair’s CAL record is 87) and they break down like this – 62 rushing, 11 receiving, one kickoff return, four punt returns and five defensive TDs. He also holds the CAL record with 23 two-point conversions. Byers even threw a touchdown pass last season.

He also holds the CAL record for most points by a sophomore (178) and most points by a junior (232).

Assuming that St. Joseph has seven more games this year, Byers is also on pace to set a new South Jersey career record. The only four South Jersey players with more points than Byers are Sinclair, Paulsboro’s Isaac Redman (566), Glassboro’s Corey Clement (588) and the current record-holder – Paulsboro’s Kevin Harvey with 656 points.

Aside from Byers’ likely new Cape-Atlantic record on Saturday, the latest list of scoring leaders at CAL schools includes Lou Barrios of Cedar Creek with the most TD passes (17) and both Manny Reid of Cedar Creek and Jake Schneider of Ocean City with the most TD catches (6).

Cedar Creek’s Taylor Manning has the most kicking points (26) and Ocean City’s Brendan McGonigle the most extra points (21). Keon Henry of Pleasantville has three return TDs, not only the most by a CAL player but more than any CAL team. And Ocean City has the most defensive touchdowns (4).

Holy Spirit (35.3) has scored the most points per game and Mainland and Ocean City (8.2) are allowing the least.

But there are lots more individuals and teams with the numbers to be included with the leaders. Check out all those who are among the tops in scoring entering this weekend here.
