VIDEO: Lower looks to compete while rebuilding

By BRIAN CUNNIFF

The Lower Cape May Regional High School girls basketball team appears to be facing a bit of a transition season.

With one of its more experienced players gone due to transfer, the Lady Tigers will field a young lineup this season.

Lower, which finished 8-18 a season ago, features just four returning players with significant varsity experience. They include seniors Helena Roesing (5-9 F) and Gabby Grey (5-5 G), junior Molly McGuigan (5-5 F) and sophomore Lindsay Holden (5-1 G).

“We’re a pretty young group,” Lower coach Mike Pittman said.

Holden is the team’s leading returning scorer at a little more than six points per game. She led the team in three-point baskets with 28.

Roesing is the club’s best interior player, while Grey is expected to handle the ball and score a bit more this season.

Others on the varsity roster include seniors Emma Muldoon (5-8 F) and Athena Bennett (5-10 F), juniors Alyssa Wagner (5-3 G) and Jordyn Raines (5-3 G), sophomore Alyssa Lemmon (5-3 F) and freshman Emma Lee (5-6 G).

Lower was a bit more competitive than its eight-win record from last year might indicate. The team upset an 18-win Oakcrest team and lost by just five points to Cape-Atlantic National Conference champion Mainland.

Lower will try to play a defensive style, keeping scores low and trying to remain in games into the final quarter.

The hope is that the team can be as competitive as possible while going through a rebuild. It will be difficult in a talented National Conference that includes Ocean City and the aforementioned Mustangs, two of the top programs in South Jersey.

“Teams like Mainland and Ocean City are obviously going to be very tough for us,” Pittman said. “But I think we can be competitive with everyone else and maybe challenge for third in our conference.”

Lower Cape May opens the season at Atlantic County Institute of Technology on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Pittman is assisted by Greg Douglass.
