VIDEO: Second-half scoring not enough for Wildwood

By BRIAN CUNNIFF

WILDWOOD — The Wildwood High School football team couldn’t overcome a miserable start on Saturday.

The Warriors fell behind by 23-0 at the half before showing some third-quarter spunk but eventually fell, 30-12, to Haddon Township at Maxwell Field.

The loss keeps Wildwood winless at 0-6

Wildwood got its first score with 4:16 left in the fourth quarter when David Rosa caught a five-yard pass from Ernie Troiano in the back of the end zone. The play ended the team’s best drive of the day, a 68-yard march that took 10 plays. A Junior Hans 20-yard reception and Joey Mormile 21-yard run highlighted the drive.

Later in the period, after Haddon Township upped its lead to 30-6, Hans scored the Warriors’ second touchdown on an electric 93-yard kickoff return that began in the middle of the field and ended with Hans racing down the right sideline untouched.

Troiano finished 14 for 26 through the air for 92 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He completed 13 of his first 19 passes. But many Wildwood drives were stalled due to sacks and penalties.

In addition to his log kickoff return, Hans caught six passes for 29 yards. Dom Troiano added four catches for 47 yards.

Joe Awad led the Warrior defense with 11 tackles, three of which were for loss.

Wildwood, which has held halftime leads in two of its losses this season, faces another tough game this Saturday at Maple Shade before finishing out the regular season with a home game Saturday, Oct. 23 against Riverside.

Wildwood quarterback Ernie Troiano scrambles as teammate Joey Mormile tries to get in position to block during Saturday’s game against Haddon Township. Troiano completed 14 of 26 passes but the Warriors suffered a 30-12 defeat.
