VIDEO: Fathi becomes Wildwood’s latest 1K scorer

By BRIAN CUNNIFF

WILDWOOD – Three seconds into Monday’s game, Imene Fathi did something she almost never does – she missed a wide-open layup.

The miscue was long forgotten a few moments later.

Fathi, a senior guard on the Wildwood High School girls basketball team, sank a left-wing three-pointer early in the first quarter to record the 1,000th point of her career in what eventually became a 68-28 victory over Clayton.

Fathi, a four-year starter, became the 11th player in Wildwood High School girls basketball history to surpass 1,000 career points. She hit the milestone point in front of a huge crowd that would rival that at a game deep in the state tournament.

Fathi finished with 12 points and five assists in the win. Freshman Macie McCracken led all scorers with 19 points. Junior Maya Benichou added a career-high 16 points.

Wildwood (9-0) is the last unbeaten team in South Jersey. The Lady Warriors face Clayton again on Tuesday away from home before hosting Salem on Thursday. The team is then scheduled to play South Jersey power Clearview on Saturday in the third round of the South Jersey Girls Basketball Invitational Tournament.

Fathi exited Monday’s game with 1,007 career points.
