Josh Wright of the Cape May Tech boys basketball team is the latest CoastSportsToday.com Athlete of the Week.
And what a week it was.
Last Wednesday, the senior guard hit a fall-away three-point shot at the buzzer to beat rival Lower Cape May, 51-50. He finished with 20 points in the game.
Two days later, in the team’s next game, Wright was fouled while going to the basket as time expired and sank the first free throw to provide the Hawks a 53-52 victory. Wright had 25 points in that outing.
Then on Saturday, Wright also helped the Hawks to a 53-42 win over Vineland Prep.
During that stretch, Wright moved into second place all-time in scoring in Cape-Atlantic League history, entering this week with 2,311 career points. He passed 2011 St. Augustine Prep graduate Isaiah Morton (2,289) and is now second to Pleasantville great Reggie Miller, who tallied 2,505 points in a career that ended in 1976.
Wright is Cape May County’s all-time leading scorer in boys basketball. LaMarr Greer, a 1994 graduate of Middle Township, finished his career with 2,637 points, but Greer played his first two high school seasons at Overbrook High School in Pine Hill. John Leahy, the current Middle Township girls coach, is in second place behind Wright. Leahy ended his high school career at Middle in 1990 with 2,139 career points.
