Catching up with some former Cape May County high school athletes now competing at the college level:
John Mooers (senior-Rutgers track & field-MTHS) placed third in the discus with a throw of 185 feet, 2 inches, at the prestigious Penn Relays last weekend. The distance represented Mooers’ personal best in the event. Rutgers next competes at the Big Ten Championships May 10-12 at the University of Iowa.
Jimmy Versage (junior-St. Thomas Aquinas baseball-MTHS) has seen action in 34 of a possible 41 games so far this season for the Division II Spartans and is batting .208 with 11 hits in 53 at bats. He has eight RBI and 11 runs scored. St. Thomas Aquinas, located in Sparkhill, N.Y., enters this week at 18-23 overall, 10-13 in the East Coast Conference. …
Ashley Lamey (junior-Jefferson lacrosse-LCMR) has played in 11 of a possible 14 games and has recorded five goals and three assists for the Rams. She had a goal and two assists in last weekend’s 17-12 win over Dominican. Jefferson finished the regular season at 9-5 overall, 8-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Jefferson next plays in the semifinal round of the CACC Tournament on Friday. …
Andrew Mormile (sophomore-Mercer County College baseball-WHS) scored a run in the team’s recent 13-2 win over Ocean County. Mormile has seen action in 11 of 41 games so far this season. Mercer is 29-12 overall. …
Shane Adams (senior-William Paterson baseball-CMTHS) hit an RBI double in Game 1 to help the Pioneers sweep a doubleheader (5-2, 16-5) over Stockton on Saturday. The two wins clinched a berth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament for William Paterson. Adams has played in 18 of a possible 38 games and is hitting .324 with six doubles and 13 RBI. The Pioneers enter this week at 25-13 overall, 10-8 NJAC. …
Keani Hindle (sophomore-Immaculata softball-OCHS) leads the Atlantic East Conference in batting average (.481), home runs (10) and RBI (48). Immaculata finished the season at 26-11-2 overall after a 6-2 loss to Wesley in AEC Tournament. …
David Hicks (senior-William & Mary golf-MTHS) tied for 11th place with a 7-over-par 220 at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Pinehurst, N.C., earlier this month. Hicks was the low scorer for the Tribe, who finished seventh in team scoring. …
Quinn Bithell (junior-Rider track & field-LCMR) won the high jump at the Duke Invitational on April 20 by posting a personal-best jump of 1.68 meters (5 feet, 5.1 inches). …
Carson Denham (freshman-Arcadia baseball-CMTHS) is 2-3 with a 4.66 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) for the Knights so far this season. In his most recent start, Denham allowed just one earned run over five innings of work in a 3-1 loss to Misericordia early last week. On Sunday, he threw one scoreless inning in relief in a 14-10 loss to Alvernia. Arcadia enters this week at 24-15 overall, 14-7 in the MAC Commonwealth. …
Josh Moore (sophomore-Bridgewater State track & field-MTHS) won the javelin toss at a distance of 196 feet, 3 inches (59.32 meters), at the Eastern Invitational earlier this month. Last weekend, he finished sixth in the event with a toss of 163-3 (49.77 meters) at the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference and New England Alliance Men’s Outdoor Championships, helping Bridgewater State to a first-place team finish. …
Ariel Magee (senior-Chestnut Hill softball-LCMR) singled and hit a three-run home run in Game 1 and had a hit and two runs scored in Game 2 as the Griffins finished the regular season by sweeping a doubleheader over Nyack on Saturday. Magee finished the regular season with a .308 batting average with 13 extra-base hits, 17 RBI and 23 runs scored. She is the program’s all-time hits leader with 125 for her career. Chestnut Hill (17-22 overall, 13-13 conference) next plays in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament this weekend. …
Mikala Gillespie (senior-Rowan lacrosse-OCHS) scored two goals and added an assist in the Profs’ 18-9 loss to 10th-ranked Catholic University on Saturday. She has recorded 20 goals and 12 assists for 32 points on the season while playing in all 16 games. Teammate Dara Hennessy (sophomore-Rowan lacrosse-OCHS) has added five goals while seeing action in seven games. Rowan (10-6 overall, 5-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference) is next in action Wednesday against Montclair State in the NJAC Tournament. …
Tyler Norris (senior-Cabrini baseball-WCHS) hit a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly in the Cavaliers’ 13-6 win over Immaculata on Sunday. For the season, Norris is hitting .299 with five home runs, 25 RBI, 25 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. Cabrini (29-7 overall, 11-1 Atlantic East Conference) next plays this weekend in the AEC Tournament.
Sean Mooney (junior-St. John’s baseball-OCHS) is 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA in nine starts for the Red Storm. He has recorded 57 strikeouts in 48 ⅔ innings pitched. St. John’s (23-17 overall, 7-5 Big East) is scheduled to host Iona Tuesday. …
Ashley Hunt (junior-Lourdes lacrosse-LCMR) scored a goal in the team’s 17-10 loss to Siena Heights in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament. She finished the season fourth on the team in both goals with 22 and points with 26 while starting all 19 games. Her younger sister Lexi Hunt (redshirt freshman-Lourdes lacrosse-LCMR) started 18 of 19 games as a defender and added a goal and an assist. Lourdes, located in Sylvania, Ohio, finished 8-11 overall. …
Dom Fiorentino (junior-Ursinus baseball-OCHS) finished the season with a .353 batting average and led the team in triples with 10 and stolen bases with 13. He also added eight home runs, 42 runs scored and 34 RBI. Ursinus (18-18 overall) finished the season Sunday with a 5-2 loss at Franklin & Marshall. …
Rachael Zeides (junior-Rider softball-OCHS) is hitting .226 with 14 RBI and 10 runs scored while seeing action in all 46 games (45 starts) for the Broncs. Rider (7-39 overall, 3-11 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) was scheduled to play a doubleheader at Marist Monday. …
Bridget Ruskey (sophomore-LaSalle lacrosse-MTHS) was recently named a second team All-Atlantic 10 selection as a midfielder. Ruskey led LaSalle in goals (33), assists (13), points (46) and draw controls (54). Teammate Allison Hunter (sophomore-LaSalle lacrosse-MTHS) finished fourth on the team in goals (18), assists (8) and points (26) and was second to Ruskey in draw controls (34). LaSalle finished 5-11 overall, 3-6 Atlantic 10. …
Maggie Slavin (freshman-Nyack lacrosse-MTHS) saw action in 14 games (four starts) at goalkeeper and finished with a 1-3 record with a 33.8 save percentage. Nyack finished the season at 5-12 overall, 3-6 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
