VIDEO: Middle slugs past LCM on Senior Day

By BRIAN CUNNIFF

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — On a day when the program honored its seniors, the Middle Township HIgh School softball team got contributions from many of them in a convincing victory over Lower Cape May.

Senior Lacey Abrego was the biggest star, tossing a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts and also going 3 for 3 with four RBI at the plate as Middle rolled to a 14-0 victory.

The game was played in searing heat — for this time of year, anyway — with the temperature at first pitch at 86 degrees.

Middle (11-10) struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Abrego hit a sacrifice fly to right and senior Sayde Nichols hit an RBI single to highlight the frame.

The Panthers added four more in the second. Abrego had an RBI single and Raine DeRose and Trinity Garner each chipped in bases-loaded walks.

Middle then put the game away in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Paige Pox and Abrego hit back-to-back two-run doubles and Mikayla Brannon also slugged an RBI double that came within a few feet of being a home run.

Paige and Grace Fox each finished with two hits, with Grace Fox scoring three times.

Abrego was rather efficient on the mound, allowing just a second-inning single and two walks over her five innings. She retired 10 straight hitters at one point.

Bri Hemling had the lone hit for Lower (2-15).
