Sean Mooney is OCHS Baseball Player of the Decade

By TOM WILLIAMS

The 2nd Decade of the 21st Century (2010-19) was clearly the most successful decade in the history of Ocean City High School baseball. And, though many talented players contributed to that success, one stands out.

Sean Mooney was a three-time first team Cape-Atlantic League all star and was All-South Jersey and All-State. After success at St. John’s University, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and is currently in rehab with the team following Tommy John surgery.

Mooney graduated with the most career wins (26) and strikeouts (302) at Ocean City plus the lowest career earned run average (1.13) and highest winning percentage (.867). He tied a school record with 17 strikeouts in one game. In addition, as a hitter he became the first at OCHS to get 100 career hits (103) and holds school records for career RBIs (65) and doubles (27).

All of this more than qualifies Mooney as The OCHS Baseball Player of the 2nd Decade.

He leads an impressive all-decade pitching staff that includes all star Beau Hall, who could also have been picked to the team as an outfielder; two-time all star Kyle Andrews; two-time all star Dan Nunan; and two-time all star Brandon Lashley.

And Connor Ortolf, a CAL all star outfielder, could also have been selected as a pitcher. Ortolf was also part of the OCHS First Decade all star team. He is joined in the outfield by two-time all star Josh Arnold (another successful pitcher); two-time all star Dom Fiorentino; and all star Matt Fumo.

The catcher for this impressive staff is all star Vince Terry. He is joined in the infield by all star first baseman Tyler Reich and another quartet of all stars – Brian Longo, Justin Healey, Christian Candeloro and A.J. Campbell. The designated hitter is Jaden Millstein, who is starting his senior year this month and is the only member of this team with high school eligibility left.

All together, these all-decade players currently hold 24 OCHS baseball records.

Head coaches Craig Mensinger and Andrew Bristol combined for 10 straight winning seasons, inclouding three 20-win seasons. Their teams win five CAL championships in the decade, a pair of South Jersey titles that led to appearances in two state finals and a total of 19 wins in the NJSIAA Tournament, more than all the previous history of OCHS baseball.

Sean Mooney, very likely the greatest baseball player in school history, adds to the impressive list of Players of the Decade that includes Mike Dugan (1st Decade), Ben Charles (1990s), Matt Dice (80s), Joe Myers (70s) and Charley Mumford (60s).

This is the last of the OCHS All-Decade teams for spring sports. You can review the other Ocean City All-Decade teams here.

And watch for the All-Decade teams for fall sports beginning in mid-November.
