Reimet goal pushes Raiders into girls soccer semifinals

By TOM WILLIAMS

It was close throughout most of the game. But Ocean City’s two top scorers combined on a late goal this afternoon at Carey Stadium and the Raiders defeated Cherry Hill West, 1-0, in the NJSIAA Group 3 girls soccer tournament.

The win moved Kelly Halliday’s Raiders (20-1-1) into the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals on Monday. Ocean City will host Toms River South (10-5-1) at Carey Stadium at 2 p.m.

South advanced by winning a shootout, 5-3, over rival Toms River East after the teams played to a scoreless tie. In the other semifinal on Monday, Mainland (14-6) will visit Gloucester Tech (15-6).

“I thought we played well today,” said Halliday, “but West made it tough to get one in. The goal came very late in the game and was a second effort by Summer. I’m very proud of our effort.”

In addition to moving the Raiders into the Group 3 semifinals, the win was the 20th of the season. It set a new record for OCHS girls soccer. The previous record was 19 set by Tom Miller’s 2004 team and equaled by Halliday’s team in 2017.

The goal also showcased the two individual record-setters. It was Reimet’s 32nd goal of the season and Slimmer’s 22nd assist – both new school records.

“This season has been so special,” Halliday said. “This group is unlike any other. The records are awesome but the memories we are creating are even better. I love this group and we are going to do everything we can do to keep the season going.”
