Brennan Ray turned one a rather impressive defensive performance for the Montclair State University football team last weekend, one that has earned him major accolades.
The Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate, a safety and special teams player for the Montclair State football team, was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week Tuesday. The D3football.com Team of the Week honors the top player nationally at each position from the previous week.
That honor came two days after Ray was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
Ray was instrumental in the Red Hawks’ 40-12 victory over Kean in their season finale thanks to a performance for the ages. He blocked an extra point on Kean’s first touchdown and later intercepted a two-point conversion pass and returned it 99 yards for a defensive two-point score. Ray also scored a touchdown on a 29-yard interception return in the game.
Ray finished the season tied for the team lead with four interceptions. He tied for third on the team in tackles with 58 and in passes defensed with six. He finished tied for second on the team in sacks with two.
Montclair State finished the 2019 campaign at 6-4 overall, 5-2 NJAC.
Ray was an honorable mention all-NJAC selection as a linebacker last season as a freshman.
Ray is a 2018 graduate of Lower Cape May.
