CAPE MAY TECH – The Lower Cape May Regional High School softball team held off a late comeback attempt by Cape May Tech to earn its second win of the season.
Lower scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to build a big cushion and settled for a 14-11 victory over the Hawks in Monday’s game.
Hailey Elwell and Lexi Cremin each had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Delaney Brown went 2 for 4 with a long double that missed being a home run by about a foot to pace the Lower Cape May offense.
Renata Riesenberg added a hit and two RBI and Janaya Elam contributed a hit and three runs scored for Lower.
Lower went out to an 8-2 lead after 2 ½ innings. Tech rallied for a combined five runs in the third and fourth innings to draw to within two at 9-7, before Lower exploded for five runs in the sixth. Tech got four back in the bottom of the sixth but the Tigers held on for the win after both teams failed to score in the seventh.
Tech threatened in the last inning by putting runners on first and third with one out, but Lower’s Elwell ended the rally with a running catch in right-center field before firing to first base for a game-ending double play.
Kayleigh Rhodes went 3 for 3 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored for Tech. Adelia Ogden also had three hits and Amanda Daino, Devin Muir and Sophia Nemeth each chipped in two hits.
