CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Macie McCracken of Wildwood repeated as girls champion and Jack Cura of Lower Cape May took top honors in the boys race for the first time at the Big Five Cross Country Championships at Cape May County Park Friday.
McCracken, a sophomore, won the girls race by one of the widest margins in meet history, taking first place in 19 minutes, 31.26 seconds. She finished ahead of teammate Leah Pawlus, who was second in 21:58.06. Lower Cape May’s Kaitlyn Crouthamel placed third in 22:24.58, followed by teammate Jenna Hill in fourth place in 22:39.70.
Hannah Vaught-Crumock of Middle Township rounded out the top five in 23:10.22.
Middle Township won the girls team title with 27 points, followed by Lower Cape May (51) and Cape May Tech (56). Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic each did not have the required five runners to score as a team.
Cura, a senior, was also a far-and-away winner in the boys race after placing second at the meet as a junior. He posted a time of 16:45.49 to finish well ahead of second-place Jorge Cruz Valle of Wildwood, who finished second in 17:50.07.
Two more Wildwood runners, Ahmed Djellal in 19:25.50, and Brian Cunniff in 19:41.16, finished third and fourth, respectively. Middle Township’s Thomas Hargest was fifth in 19:46.58.
Lower Cape May was the boys team champion with 25 points, finishing ahead of Middle Township (41) and Cape May Tech (59). Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic also each did not have enough runners to score in the boys race.
