STONE HARBOR – There was no banner, no balloons and no commemorative balls ready for Jimmy Kane Tuesday afternoon.
But Kane, seven goals shy of 50 for his career, exploded for eight to surpass the milestone in leading the Wildwood Catholic Academy boys soccer team to its first victory of the season, a 10-6 result over St. Joseph.
When Kane ripped home his seventh goal, the senior forward made a five with one hand and a zero with the other as he celebrated becoming the 10th Crusader player to score at least 50 career goals.
He now has 20 goals on the season.
“Jimmy’s a two-year captain and he was a leading goal scorer in the CAL last year and he’s the one putting it forward and scoring the goals for us this year,” Lushok said. “We’ll certainly have a big hole to fill for next year.”
A team short on experience and depth, Wildwood Catholic (1-8) has struggled for much of the season. The team began the season with just 12 players and a couple of injuries forced the coaches and players to recruit other students to join the team in midseason.
“It’s great to finally get a ‘W’ here because these boys have been working hard,” Lushok said. “We’re starting to work some new guys into the fold and that’s been helping us as far as substitutions go and giving the guys some breathers.”
T.J. DiDonato scored the other two goals for Wildwood Catholic, one of which came on a strike from about 30 yards early in the second half.
