WILDWOOD – Wildwood Middle School hosted the annual Wildwood Optimist Island Run “Little 5” cross country meet Thursday afternoon.
The meet, which included six grammar school teams, started and finished on the boardwalk near the Wildwoods Convention Center and included separate boys and girls races of 1.5 miles.
Nick Galinus of St. Joseph (Somers Point) won the boys race in 9 minutes, 7.7 seconds. He finished ahead of teammate Matt Heirholzer, who finished second in 9:14.6.
Bishop McHugh’s Zach Marks was third in 9:23.7, Crest Memorial’s Nate Bennington placed fourth in 9:29.3 and St. Joseph’s William Murray rounded out the top five in 9:30.1.
St. Joseph won the team title in the boys race with 33 points to beat Bishop McHugh (54), Crest Memorial (64), Cape Trinity Catholic (119), Margaret Mace (123) and Wildwood (129).
The boys race included 56 finishers.
Sam Marks of Bishop McHugh placed first in the girls race in 9:45.3. Crest Memorial’s Sofia Jurusz was second in 9:49.1, St. Joseph’s Chloe Malone finished third in 10:08.6, Bishop McHugh’s Sammy Andress ended fourth in 10:20.2 and Wildwood’s Ava Troiano placed fifth in 10:20.7.
Bishop McHugh won a very close team competition in the girls race with 60 points to finish ahead of Crest Memorial (63), Cape Trinity Catholic (69), St. Joseph (78), Margaret Mace (95) and Wildwood (115).
Eighty-seven runners finished the girls race.
The event was sponsored by the Optimist Club of the Wildwoods.
