Taj Thweatt and the Wildwood Catholic High School boys basketball team will travel to St. Joseph for a key CAL National Conference game Wednesday.

WILDWOOD – The Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic high school basketball teams each won opening-round games in their respective brackets to highlight local teams’ play in the 2017 Boardwalk Basketball Classic.

The following are recaps of boys games involving Cape May County teams:

BOYS

Wildwood 53, Phoenixville (Pa.) 42: Kyion Flanders scored 18 points, registered eight steals and had four assists to pace Wildwood (2-3), which never relinquished the lead after the late stages of the first quarter in the Bernie McCracken Memorial Bracket first-round game. Tyler Tomlin added 13 points and Marquel Matthews chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for Wildwood.

Wildwood Catholic 68, Montgomery Blair (Md.) 54: Wildwood Catholic opened a 20-5 lead in the opening quarter and saw Montgomery Blair rally to within two points late in the second quarter before the Crusaders surged in the second half to open a lead as high as 18 points. Caleb Fields led all scorers with 23 points and Taj Thweatt shot 8 for 11 from the floor and scored 16 points to go with 13 rebounds and five blocked shots to pace Wildwood Catholic (5-0), which advances to Friday’s title game in the Doug DeWeese Memorial Bracket.
