The Raiders are No. 1.
Ocean City High School’s girls lacrosse team scored nine unanswered goals today and defeated Mainland, 13-4, at Carey Stadium.
The victory lifted the Raiders to 10-1 on the season and 7-0 in the Cape-Atlantic League. Mainland is now one game behind the Raiders and both Middle Township and Holy Spirit are two behind. Ocean City has already defeated both Middle and Spirit.
OCHS has CAL games remaining against Our Lady of Mercy (home on Monday), at Atlantic City (Friday), at Lower Cape May (May 8) and with Absegami (home on May 10). Ocean City will be favored in all of those games.
The Raiders led today, 4-3, late in the first half before scoring the game’s next nine goals for a 13-3 lead. Mainland scored the game’s final goal.
Sophomore goalie Abbey Fenton and the rest of the OCHS defense nearly shut out the Mustangs in the second half. Mainland (7-2, 6-1 CAL) entered the game averaging 15 goals per contest. Their lowest previous output was eight goals against Shawnee.
Junior Danielle Donoghue scored five times against Mainland and made two assists. Senior Shannon O’Reilly added three goals and an assist. Junior Emily DiMarino and sophomore Ashley Devlin each scored twice with DiMarino also getting two assists. Junior Anna Devlin rounded out the scoring with a goal and sophomore Ava Auwarter made three assists.
Fenton and Donoghue both talk about the win in video interviews, below, along with video of one of Donoghue’s five goals.
Ocean City is off this weekend but will host West Deptford (May 5) and Cherry Hill East (May 12) the next two Saturdays.
