WILDWOOD — Eighth-graders Jorge Cruz of Wildwood Junior High and Sofia Jurusz of Crest Memorial Elementary won the respective boys and girls races at the Little Five cross country meet that began and finished on the boardwalk in front of the Wildwoods Convention Center Thursday afternoon.
The meet brought together the boys and girls cross country teams from eight different grammar schools from Cape May and Atlantic counties. Each race was 1 ½ miles in length.
Cruz, a first-year competitive runner, ran away from the field in the boys race, posting a time of 9 minutes, 16.6 seconds, to beat the field by more than 30 seconds.
Bishop McHugh’s Zachary Marks was second in 9:47.1, St. Joseph’s Vinny Polinstina placed third in 9:50.0, Crest Memorial’s Jack Del Monte finished fourth in 9:59.9 and Bishop McHugh’s Charlie Dunner was fifth in 9:53.5.
Bishop McHugh scored 59 points to win the team championship ahead of St. Joseph (62), Wildwood (67), Crest Memorial (90), Margaret Mace (101), Richard M. Teitelman (135), Cape Trinity (170) and Woodbine (no score).
The boys race featured 55 finishers.
Jurusz was also a comfortable winner in the girls race, recording a time of 10:23.9.
Margaret Mace’s Macie McCracken placed second in 10:45.7, Cape Trinity’s Reagan Flickinger finished third in 19:49.9, Bishop McHugh’s Mackenzie Palek posted a fourth-place effort in 10:56.3 and Woodbine’s Jada Alston was fifth in 11:12.0.
Margaret Mace, which also finished its regular season unbeaten in dual meets, scored 52 points to beat Crest Memorial (57), Cape Trinity (73), Richard M. Teitelman (99), Woodbine (122), Bishop McHugh (128), Wildwood (153) and St. Joseph (no score).
The girls race had 79 finishers.
The event was sponsored by the Optimist Club of the Wildwoods. Timing was executed by DelMoSports.
