By TOM WILLIAMS
Ocean City High School running back Liam Bergman became the 31st running back at the school to accumulate 1,000 or more rushing yards in the nearly 70 seasons that the stats are available.
The 5-foot-10, 172-pound senior carried the ball 13 times for 95 yards in Ocean City’s Group 3 playoff loss to Delsea, including a 67-yard touchdown run, giving him 1,015 over four years.
Bergman has 643 rushing yards this season, gained 261 as a junior, 110 his sophomore year and one yard as a freshman.
Issac Robertson and Harry Pfeifle, Bergman’s backfield teammates, join him in the all-time OCHS Top 50 (see chart below). They are the third trio from the same class to be listed among the top 50. The others are Danny Davis, Heath Muzslay and Anthony Constantine in 1992 and Adam Martin, Jay Toscano and Brian Coggins in 1999.
Pfeifle also has the distinction of rushing for more yards (769) as a quarterback than any traditional QB since 1949, when rushing stats became available.
The Raiders have one game left this season – Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Carey Stadium against Pleasantville.
